Confessions of a Writing Implement Addict

Ok, so Lady Vader mentioned today the gifts of a student...well in her case students so I thought I'd continue the theme. For Christmas I did have a student give me a beautiful mason jar filled with the goodies to make Rocky Road brownies...which given my chocoholic tendencies will be put to good use. I also received a gift card to a coffee bar in the town I teach in. But all that aside, and I appreciate it soo much, what I got from a student today really takes the cake.

So here's the back story. I have an unnatural affinity for office supplies. Seriously, I'll spend hours in a place like Staples or Office Depot wandering around wanting to get everything I see. It's amusing. Anyway, I have these Pilot G2 pens - I adore them, they write well and with purpose. It's cool. It turns out they now make mechanical pencils of the same sort. I was thrilled, so I bought a 4-pack. The first day I had it with me in school? Lost it. And I don't lose things like that easily. I figured one of the kids accidentally put it in their bag, so I'd ask them.

No dice.

Next day, the same damn thing happens. At this point I'm beyond annoyed. Besides not being able to trust my students, I want my damn pencil back!

This is where this kid comes in - the story of my annoyance spread quickly, and 2 days ago I had a student come up to me and ask me if the pencils I was looking for were called G2's. I said yes. One of my friends tells me later that this kid was asking her if this was the pencil I really liked, cause he saw them and was gonna get them for me. My reaction was "aww, that's awesome!" Cause you know he was thinking of it even though he was out of school.

He comes into his class today, sees me chatting with my friend, and says "I have a present for you!"

Yes, that's right - he got me an entire 12 pack of pencils, plus an extra thing of lead and some refill erasers! Now here's the kicker...

He's not actually my student!

That's right, he's with my friend the other teacher, we (my friend and I) joke that he's 50% my student since he comes in for extra help with me if she's not available.

But yeah, how thoughtful is that? I couldn't believe it. It's nice to know that they occasionally thing of you!

This doesn't mean I'm not ferociously praying for a snowday tomorrow...
